The Kids

Kids shown with   under the description come with lesson plans included.
Those shown without will have lesson plans available later.

Superhero

Concept: Metacognition—The Superhero inspires students to become Super Readers by thinking about what they read.  He exemplifies the Metacognition strategy perfectly.

Baseball Team

Concept: Sequence—A Baseball Team bats in order. They hit and run the bases in a certain order.  What a fun way to teach Sequence of Events!

Storyteller

Concept: Retelling—We all love a good story. Students can use The Storyteller and 3 Little Pigs characters to Retell the “pieces” (Story Structure) every good story should have.

Doctor and Veterinarian

Concept: Compare and Contrast—How are a Medical Doctor and a Veterinarian alike?  How are they different?  Together they create an excellent representation of the Compare and Contrast strategy?

Crossing Guard

Concept: Cause and Effect—can easily be modeled by a Crossing Guard because she raises her hand (cause) and the traffic stops (effect).

Eye Doctor

Concept: Clarify—The Eye Doctor helps us to see things more clearly.  This kid personifies the methods we need to clarify a word or concept as we read.

Mother

Concept: Questioning—Who fields more questions in a day than a Mother?  The Mother is the obvious choice to teach about Questioning.

Weather Forcaster

Concept: Prediction—The Weather Forecaster makes predictions for a living.  She also teaches the strategies good readers need to predict what will happen in a story.

Detective

Concept: Inference/Drawing Conclusions—The Detective is the ideal metaphor for Inference and Drawing Conclusions. As with a Detective solving a case students use the same skills to develop inferences/draw conclusions.

TV Reporter

Concept: Description—The TV Reporter is live and on the scene with the latest news flash!  He helps us to understand the latest events (or most interesting animals, or fascinating people) with his excellent descriptions.

Firefighter

Concept: Problem and Solution—A Fire Fighter provides the solution we need when there is a fire.  He is the perfect person to demonstrate the thinking used in Problem and Solution.

Teacher

Concept: Question and Answer—A Teacher inspires good answers by asking good questions.  She is the logical person to portray the Question and Answer strategy.
